Getting Started

TrolleySpy is a community-driven grocery price comparison tool for Irish shoppers. Our team maintains a verified database of prices across Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Dunnes Stores and SuperValu. You can also log your own prices as you shop.

What can I do here?

Tip: Price Tracker is designed for mobile use. Open it on your phone while you're in the shop to compare prices on the spot before you put something in your trolley.

Adding a Price Entry

The Add Price form lets you record what you paid for a product. It works as a cascade — each step unlocks the next.

Shopping Date

Defaults to today. If you're logging a price from yesterday's shop, change this first — it affects which price auto-fills from the database.

Category

Only categories with products in our database are shown. The number in brackets tells you how many products we have in each category. If a category is missing, we haven't added any products there yet — use the Suggestions page to let us know.

Product

Products load after you pick a category. If the product you want isn't listed, it's not in our database yet — please suggest it and we'll add it.

Brand

Brands are linked to products in our database. For shop own-brands (e.g. Tesco Finest, Milbona, Cowbelle), selecting the brand will automatically lock the shop — because those brands are only sold in one shop.

Shop

For most brands you pick the shop yourself. For shop own-brands the shop is auto-selected and locked — you can't change it because that brand is only sold in one place.

Price

Auto-fills from our database when a product and shop are selected. If we have a price on record, it appears automatically. You can change it if the shelf price is different — that's how we keep the database up to date through community contributions.

Was on Promotion?

If our database shows an active promotion for this product in this shop, the checkbox pre-ticks automatically and shows the deal details. Untick it if you paid full price — for example if the promotion ended but our records haven't updated yet.

Weight Products (meat, fish, deli)

Some products like salmon or deli cheese are sold by weight — priced per kg but you buy a specific amount. For these products the price field shows "Price per kg" and a "Weight purchased (grams)" field appears below. Enter the weight on the label and the total cost calculates automatically.

Example: Salmon at €24.99/kg. You bought 340g. Type 340 in the grams field — it shows "Total: €8.50 for 340g" automatically.

Comparing Prices

The Compare Prices page searches our verified price database. Type any product name — even just one word like "butter" or "milk" — and see all matching products with their current price across every shop.

DB price vs Your price

Cheapest label

When the same product appears in multiple shops, the cheapest verified DB price gets a "✓ cheapest" label. Results are sorted cheapest first within each product group.

Brand name shown

Each result shows the brand name so you can tell the difference between, for example, Avonmore milk and Tesco Own Brand milk — both under "Milk 1L" but with different prices.

Promotions

If an active promotion is running for a product in a shop, the deal description and savings percentage show on the result. For the full list of current deals, see the Deals & Promotions page.

Adding to shopping list

Each result has a "+ List" button. Free users can add items to one shopping list. Tap the button — if you're not logged in, you'll be taken to the free registration page and brought straight back with your item saved.

Tip: Search for a short word, not a full product name. "butter" finds all butter products. "Kerrygold butter 500g" might find nothing if our product is named slightly differently.

Deals & Promotions

The Deals & Promotions page shows all active sales and multibuy offers across all five shops. No login required — bookmark it and check every week.

What types of promotions are tracked?

How current are the promotions?

We update promotions manually when the weekly leaflets come out — typically Wednesday/Thursday for Lidl and Aldi, and throughout the week for Tesco, Dunnes and SuperValu. Each promotion shows its end date so you know how long the deal lasts.

Expiring soon badge

Promotions ending within 3 days show an orange or red badge. "Ends today" means the deal expires at midnight.

Shopping List

Build your weekly shopping list and see estimated prices before you go to the shop.

Creating lists

You can create multiple named lists — for example "Weekly shop", "BBQ weekend", "Pharmacy". Switch between them using the tabs at the top.

Adding items

Select a category, then a product, then a shop, then a quantity. Prices load from our database automatically — you don't need to enter them manually.

Free vs Premium

Price Notes

Price notes are a quick personal scratchpad — write down any price you see, for any product or shop, even ones not in our database.

When to use price notes vs Add Price

Shop not on the list?

Select "Other" from the shop dropdown and a free text field appears — type any shop name you like.

Tip: Use price notes while you're walking around the shop. Quick to fill in — just product name, price, shop. You can tidy up and add them properly to the database via Add Price later at home.

Suggestions

The Suggestions page is how you help us build the database. We review every suggestion and add valid ones ourselves — your suggestions never go directly into the database, they go into a queue that our team reviews.

Three types of suggestion

Photos

You can attach a photo to any suggestion — shelf label, receipt, product packaging, or shop front. This helps us get the details exactly right. Photos are stored securely and only visible to our team.

Status of your suggestions

Your previous suggestions appear below the form with a status: Pending (under review), Approved (added to the database), or Rejected (duplicate or out of scope).

Your Account

Forgot password

Use the Forgot Password link on the login page. Enter your email and we'll send you a reset link valid for 1 hour. Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive.

Exporting your data

You can download all your price entries as a CSV file from the Export CSV page. This includes product name, shop, price, weight (for weight products), total cost, and date.

Deleting your account

To delete your account and all associated data, send us a message via the Feedback page. We'll process it within 30 days in line with GDPR.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the price in the database different from what I paid? ▼
Our database shows the most recently recorded shelf price. Prices change frequently and we update them as quickly as we can — but there may be a short lag. If you see a different price in the shop, enter what you actually paid and it helps us keep the database accurate.
Why can't I find a product I'm looking for? ▼
We're building the database gradually. If a product isn't listed yet, use the Suggestions page to let us know — include the product name, brand, size, and which shop you saw it in. A photo of the shelf label is really helpful.
The category I want is missing from the Add Price form ▼
Categories only appear in the Add Price form when we have at least one product in them. If a category is missing, we haven't added products there yet. Use the Suggestions page to tell us what you're looking for.
What does "sold by weight" mean? ▼
Some products — like salmon from a fish counter, loose bananas, or deli cheese — are priced per kilogram but you buy a specific amount cut to order. For these products, enter the price per kg and the weight in grams you bought. The total cost calculates automatically.
Why does the shop auto-select when I choose a brand? ▼
Some brands are shop own-brands and are only sold in one shop — for example, Milbona is a Lidl brand, Cowbelle is an Aldi brand. When you select one of these brands the shop auto-selects and locks, because there's only one possible shop.
Do I need an account to use TrolleySpy? ▼
No — the Compare Prices and Deals & Promotions pages are fully public. You can search and compare prices without creating an account. An account is needed for personal features: saving shopping lists, logging your own prices, price history, and notes. Registration is free and takes under a minute.
Is my data private? ▼
Yes. Your personal price history, notes, and shopping lists are only visible to you. We never share your personal data with third parties. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
I found a bug or something isn't working ▼
Please use the Feedback page to report it. Include a screenshot if you can — there's a screenshot upload option on the feedback form. We read every report.
How do I add a product that's on promotion? ▼
When you select a product and shop in the Add Price form, if we have an active promotion on record it pre-ticks the "Was on promotion" checkbox automatically. If you see a promotion that's not showing, you can tick the checkbox manually and add the deal details.
